Description
Summary:The paradox at the death of the Theotokos. The Pictorial Idea of the Late Antique Motif of Koimesis". - The Koimesis, the "Dormition" of Mary, is one of the last great motifs of Christian art that were created in antiquity and late antiquity, probably in the sixth century AD. The article inquires into the content of the picture, asks what is narrated in it and explains the origin and meaning of the iconography of the standing figure holding a child in its arms and the implications of that. The iconography combines Christology and Mariology in a seemingly paradoxical way.
