| Summary: | German television news, TV tabloid magazines and national newspapers present a distorted picture of violent crime. Under pressure from rightwing populists and so-called concerned citizens, editorial staffs increasingly mention the nationality of crime suspects - but usually only if they do not possess a German passport. This selection pattern is particularly pronounced in the case of knife attacks. This is proven through our long-term analysis conducted since 2007. Those who counter irrational fears with statistical findings face the accusation of being out of touch with life, as an exemplaric commentary analysis indicates. Deutsche Fernsehnachrichten, TV-Boulevardmagazine und überregionale Zeitungen zeigen ein Zerrbild der Gewaltkriminalität. Unter dem Druck von Rechtspopulisten und sogenannten besorgten Bürgern nennen Redaktionen vermehrt die Staatsangehörigkeit von Tatverdächtigen - aber meist nur dann, wenn diese keinen deutschen Pass haben. Besonders ausgeprägt ist dieses Auswahlmuster bei Messerangriffen. Dies belegt unsere Langzeitanalyse seit 2007. Wer irrationalen Ängsten statistische Befunde entgegenstellt, sieht sich dem Vorwurf von Lebensfremdheit ausgesetzt, wie eine exemplarische Kommentaranalyse zeigt. |
