| Summary: | Traumatized by Lynn White’s 1967 article accusing the Bible of promoting the ecological crisis, exegetes have long felt obliged to adopt a defensive posture and show that the text they study is, in fact, ecofriendly. A survey of the research from the last twenty years shows that no specific and coherent discourse can be drawn from the sacred texts. This does not mean that biblical considerations should be excluded from the debate, or that theological reflection on the issue should be abandoned. If these can and must play a role, this should be done through the use of a hermeneutic, that is to say, an adaptive interpretation with insight in its proper presuppositions and with an understanding of the cultural, philosophical, religious and ecological distance between the Bible and the contemporary world. Traumatisés par l’article de 1967 de Lynn White qui accusait la Bible d’avoir favorisé la crise écologique, les exégètes se sont longtemps crus obligés d’adopter une posture défensive et de montrer que le texte qu’ils étudient est en réalité écofriendly. Un survol des travaux de ces vingt dernières années montre qu’aucun discours spécifique et cohérent ne peut être tiré de la bibliothèque sacrée. Cela ne veut pas dire qu’il faut que les considérations bibliques soient exclues du débat ou désertent les réflexions théologiques sur la question. Si elles peuvent et doivent intervenir, cela doit se faire par l’utilisation d’une herméneutique, c’est-à-dire dire d’une interprétation adaptative, lucide sur ses présupposés et sur le chemin qu’elle fait parcourir aux textes pour les faire cadrer avec une situation que leurs auteurs n’envisageaient pas au moment où ils les ont rédigés. |
