Description
Summary:The matter of the Islamic "veil" is one of the most complex fields within the contemporary Muslim societies. In the Western tradition too, this topic has become a political slogan and a tool of battles in the name of the secularism of nation-states or, in contrary case, a symbol of defense of religious practice rights. The debate on the Islamic "veil" is characterized by a mess oncerning the different readings and the interpretations of customs and religious practices within categories crystallized, abstract and sometimes misleading. This paper intends, first, to analyze the main reasons underlying the rules of women's clothing within the categories provided by the classical Islamic law (shari'a); later, it will be described the relevant differences in policy and law enacted by different contemporary Muslim countries, so as to draw some considerations (certainly not definitive) useful for better classification of the phenomenon in question and open up new questions.
