Description
Summary:In this article, a critical edition of an unknown to-date Office of the holy hermit and myrrh-gushing Barbaros (9th cent.) is presented for the first time. This edition is accompanied by an introduction, which illustrates the hagio-graphic tradition and the discussion of the researchers regarding the four saints that bear the name "Barbaros" as well as other issues relating to the text of the Office and, in particular, its manuscript tradition, liturgical usage, structure, content, and metre. The importance of the text that is being edited lies within the fact that it is the only known Office that was dedicated to this saint and, what is more, is a hugely important testimony for the spread of his veneration in the Late Byzantine period.
