The Founding Ideas and Future Directions of Religious Museums in Korea

| Summary: | 박물관은 박제된 건물 안에서 유물을 전시하는 곳이라는 사고나 성스러운 유물을 보관하는 행위자체가 불경(不敬)하다는 식의 부정적인 태도는 종교박물관(이 연구에서는 다종교박물관이 아니라 단일 종교박물관을 지칭하는 용어로 사용)의 설립 의의를 희석하거나 곡해한다. 그럼에도 불구하고 종교박물관에 대한 많은 연구들은 적어도 세 가지 측면에서 중요한 종교적 의의를 나타낸다. 첫째, 종교박물관은 순례의 목적지로서 제의의 장소이며. 둘째, 종교 유물의 숭배가 세속 사회에서는 예술의 숭상으로 대체되었을지라도 박물관 내에서의 영적 경험은 사원 내의 영적 경험과 유사하고 관람객은 종교적 현현과 상통하는 황홀한 상태를 경험하게 된다. 셋째, 대부분의 종교박물관은 종교와 종교 집단에 관한 스토리텔링과 연동하고 있기 때문에 종교의 신성성을 더욱 강화한다. 현대 한국 사회에서 종교는 다양한 사회집단 간 통합이나 화해의 장으로 기능하기보다는 때로는 갈등 요소로 작용하고 있다는 것이 주지의 사실이다. 종교 간, 종파 간 갈등은 주로 타자에 대한 이해 부족에서 기인하는데, 종교박물관은 종교적 소통이나 이해를 통하여 집단 간, 또는 개인 간의 갈등을 해소하거나 적어도 완화할 수 있다. 이에 본 논문은 종교박물관이 함의하는 종교성의 의의를 설명하고 한국의 종교박물관 설립과 연구 실태를 통하여 종교박물관의 설립과 운영 방향을 제시할 것이다. The notions that museums are merely vaults where one keeps relics, or that it is profane to remove artifacts from their original, sacred site, may distort or dilute the founding idea of religious museums. Most of the studies on religious museums find at least three items of major religious significance. First, religious museums are ideal destinations for pilgrimages and places for the carrying out of rituals. Secondly, although the worship of religious relics has been replaced with mere appreciation of artworks in secular society, spiritual experiences in museums resemble those of religious ecstasy akin to religious manifestation. Thirdly, many religious museums emphasize the sacredness of particular religions or religious organizations through the role they play in storytelling. It is a well-known fact that religions serve to divide, rather than unify, in modern Korean society. The conflicts among religions or religious sects are typically due to a lack of understanding. In this context, religious museums can help resolve conflict among groups or individuals by facilitating religious communication. This study aims to explain the significance of religiosity in these museums and suggest future directions they might take. In this research, a religious museum refers to a mono-religious museum as opposed to a multi-religious museum. |
