Women Agency in Church Life: Older Women Who Use the Liquid Religiosity of the Urban Church

| Summary: | 한국 보수 성향 개신교회인 LP교회 여성노인들은 한국의 성불평등, 세대간 불평등의 열악한 환경에서도 가정과 교회에서 주도적인 삶을 산다. 일반적으로 여성들은 약하고 의존적인 존재로 인식되며 가부장제의 영향에서 벗어나지 못한 모습들이 주로 다루어졌지만 LP교회 여성노인들은 여전히 남성중심주의적인 교회 환경에서도 전략적으로 자신들의 여성행위성을 펼치며 가정과 교회에서 주도적인 역할과 지위를 확보하는 모습을 보여 준다. 본 연구는 인류학적 현지조사 방법을 통하여 LP교회 여성노인들의 삶을 분석하였다. 서울에서 압축적 근대화를 경험하며 급속한 도시화 과정에 적응해왔던 사람들에 의해 구성된 소형교회인 LP교회의 액체 종교성-경제적인 요소를 중시하며 그 외의 모든 종교적 삶의 요소들은 개인이 선택하여 결정함에 의해 나타나는 유동적 모습-은 이 여성들이 여성행위성을 펼칠 수 있는 조건과 환경이 되었다. LP교회 교인들은 전국 각지의 향촌들로부터 경제적인 이유들로 서울로 이주하였고 낯선 서울에서의 적응 과정에서 향촌 공동체와 유사한 특성 LP교회를 형성하고 지금까지 관계를 유지하며 종교 생활을 이어오고 있다. 이 과정에서 이들은 점점 더 경제적인 요소를 중시하게 되었고 종교적 삶을 포함한 모든 영역을 개인적으로 선택하게 되었으며 그 결과 끊임없이 변화하는 액체 종교성을 특징으로 갖게 되었다. 교인간의 강한 유대와 액체 종교성은 왕복 3시간의 교회 차량 이동을 감수하며 교회생활을 유지하게 하였다. 교회의 의례에 참여하기 위해 이동하는 교회 차량 안에 마련되는 독특한 시간과 공간은 가변성이 극대화되는 경계적-리미날리티(Liminality)의 자리이다. 여성노인들은 이러한 가변성의 자리를 활용하여 자신들의 여성행위성을 적극적으로 발휘한다. 본 연구는 교회 이동 차량 안에서 전개되는 LP교회 여성노인들의 여성행위성을 집중적으로 분석한다. The older women worshippers at LP-Church, a conservative Protestant church, play a leading role in their homes and church, under the poor conditions of sex and intergenerational inequality that prevail in Korea. In this environment, women are considered weak and dependent beings. While the lives of women under patriarchy have been the subject of much research, older women worshippers play a leading role in their homes and church, enjoying strong female agency. This study investigated these women’s lives, using an anthropologic approach. Liquid religiosity, or the fluid concept of religiosity among modern people who think economics to be important, as well as others, who think it is simply an object for individual choices, is examined in the context of LP-Church, a small church, as among the conditions and situations in which they could present their female agency. The members of LP-Church came to exhibit liquid religiosity in the process of adapting to rapid urbanization in circumstances of compressed modernization. The members of LP-Church migrated to Seoul from the rural villages, and they have built LP-Church to be institution similar to that of traditional village communities, in the process adapting to the unusual situation of Seoul, while retaining the relationships among the religious lives of the worshippers. In the process, they came to regard economic elements as important, and individually, they have chosen the every part of the religious life, allowing them to develop liquid religiosity. The strong sodality of the church and its liquid religiosity allowed the worshippers to keep supporting the church life in spite of the three hours it took to be transported there by church van. The unique time and space in the church van moving to church worship made the liminal stage the most variable. Old women expressed their female agency in the variable stage. This study examines their female agency which they expressed in the church van moving toward church worship. |
