Description
Summary:The worship of Dante characterizes key determinants in the history of papacy both before and after the end of potestas directa in temporalibus. The genesis of the Dantean worship is tied to the foundation of the papal library, whose first inventory was drafted in 1369, and to the works of humanists and danteists of the papal court: Coluccio Salutati, Leonardo Bruni, Poggio Bracciolini, and Flavio Biondo. Consequently, during the Renaissance, Pope Pio II Piccolomini's (1458-1464) danteism flourishes and bears fruit, being particularly focused on Dante's political beliefs and the potential of the Pope's pastoral role. Two centuries later, in Bernini's and Borromini's Rome, Alessandro VII Chigi's (1655-1667) danteism must be contextualized in the esthetics and theology of the Age of Catholic Reform: the Chigi Collection at the Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana is a treasure trove of manuscripts and Dante's codices. In the modern age, the end of papal temporal power reinstates the prophetic value of Dante's orthodoxy, opening the door to contemporary papal danteism.
