Videre analyserer artikkelen hans Odin-teori, med vekt på den rollen teorien spilte i hans historiske forfatterskap. Schønings odinologi var viktig for hans tese om hvordan Norge og Norden ble befolket og en del av hans polemikk med tyske historikere i hans samtid. According to Gerhard Schøning, the multifaceted accounts of Odin within Old Norse-Icelandic literature hid signs of no less than three different historical figures who had pretended to be, and were accepted as, the Norse deity. This article examines the inspiration behind Schøningʼs euhemerism and highlights the importance of Johann Jacob Brucker. Furthermore, the article also analyses his Odin theory, emphasizing the role played by the theory in his historical writings. Schøningʼs «Odinology» was important for his thesis on how Norway and the Nordic countries were first populated and part of his polemic with German historians of his time. It helps us to see the European dimension of his celebrated patriotism. |
