| Summary: | In the controversial reception of Amoris laetitia, several key points in moral theology have been the focus of debate: the role of conscience, the place of norms, and the nature of discernment. This article sets out to clarify these notions and respond to possible objections. Concerning norms that are seen to be absolute and intrinsically evil acts, it is not a matter of calling into question the usefulness of clear moral benchmarks but rather of considering the manner in which these necessarily general definitions are used to morally evaluate a concrete action by a practical judgment. The discussion thus focuses on the nature of the moral object, which can never dispense with a consideration of the intentions and circumstances of the action and on the right place for moral norms. Moral discernment, which has been given renewed value in AL, is the indispensable complement to a normative ethics and requires that conscience be given its proper role in the moral life. The article concludes with an evaluation of the changes that AL has given to moral theology. |
