Sumario:The article examines three points. (1) It shows that, to ground the disciplinary change sought by Amoris laetitia regarding "so-called irregular unions" in sacramental theology, the sacrament of marriage can only be understood in relation to the other sacraments of the Christian life, with which it interacts. (2) It then demonstrates that this sacrament should not be isolated from the others while at the same time it highlights its uniqueness. (3) Finally, it argues that a contemporary theology of the sacraments supports the paths opened up by Pope Francis that reconnect the baptized in complex matrimonial situations with the sacramental life and concludes by considering some contrary arguments and responses.
