As a Southern Protestant, Butler approached this inheritance in ways that did not conform with the sentiments of either his own community or that of the Roman Catholic majority. Investigating both the strengths and weaknesses of Butler's approach to this inheritance is crucial to understanding his unique contribution to twentieth-century Irish life.
