Description
Summary:When essayist Hubert Butler (1900–1991) was rediscovered at the end of his life, he was hailed as a forerunner of the more tolerant Ireland that pluralists wished to see. Yet often overlooked was how much his vision of an inclusive, nonsectarian society remained rooted in Christian language and values. As a Southern Protestant, Butler approached this inheritance in ways that did not conform with the sentiments of either his own community or that of the Roman Catholic majority. Investigating both the strengths and weaknesses of Butler's approach to this inheritance is crucial to understanding his unique contribution to twentieth-century Irish life.
