Описание
Итог:This article explores the personal and private nature of early modern diplomacy through the lens of the French ambassador Jacques de Germigny in the Ottoman Empire. It demonstrates the extensive degree to which Germigny depended on Muslim Ottoman friends and allies to succeed in his mission. Germigny’s embassy is particularly illuminating because he experienced dramatically different results in his tenure’s first and second halves. During the first two years, Germigny was generally successful in his endeavors, whereas he suffered dramatic defeats in the final two years. This article argues that his successes came from integrating himself within the Ottoman Empire’s factional network and acquiring prominent allies to support his causes that benefitted them. During the last two years, these allies were absent from the capital and Germigny failed to replace them, leading to his isolation and recall to France.
