Resumo: | Maier published his book Jesus von Nazareth in der talmudischen Überlieferung in 1978. Peter Schäfer framed his study Jesus in the Talmud of 2007 as an argument against Maier. While Maier tried to show that the rabbis of the Babylonian Talmud did not speak about Jesus, or more precisely Jesus the Nazarene, Schäfer tried to prove the opposite. According to both, textual variants in manuscripts of the Babylonian Talmud validated their respective findings. In the meantime, no further manuscripts of the Babylonian Talmud dating from before the 12th century have been found. However, well-known Hebrew sources and recently edited Latin translations of Talmudic passages, written before, during and after the Disputation of Paris in 1240 and thus before Church censorship began after 1263, enable us to re-evaluate Schäfer’s conclusions. The article traces the “Jesus texts” cited during the disputation through the relevant sources and then evaluates Schäfer’s argument based on the results. |
