Summary: | The Talmudic text of bGiṭṭ 56b-57a, which describes Jesus’ torment in hell, is very peculiar. Numerous publications have therefore dealt with it over the centuries. Federico Dal Bo recently published a new interpretation of this text, as well as of its oldest Latin translation. Not only have I followed Dal Bo’s arguments with interest, but they have also inspired me to reconsider my own understanding of the texts. In particular, with regard to the text of bGiṭṭ 56b-57a it is very different from Dal Bo, but also from all other explanations that I know. For me, this is not an intentional polemic against Jesus or Christianity, but a humorous approach to the problems of external and internal threats to Judaism over the centuries. However, the Latin translation did not follow this line of thinking. By shortening the text and making a very subtle change, the translator made it not only a polemic against Jesus, but also a text that can easily be understood as blasphemy against the Christian faith. |
