A Christ-Centered Acceptance and Commitment Program for Racial Harmony in Christian Populations

Descrição
Resumo:Diversity, equity, and inclusiveness (DEI) programs are viewed as essential to address racism and create racial harmony and equity in society. Current DEI systematic reviews, however, reflect mixed results and a lack of evidence for long-term impact on participants (Devine & Ash, 2022). In response to the need for further programmatic development, this article explores the intersection of psychology and spirituality to develop a preliminary program to promote racial harmony in Christian populations. Psychological and spiritual factors that promote disunity and those factors that encourage unity are considered. More specifically, social psychological theories, behavioral theories, and trauma considerations inform psychological aspects of our proposed program. We draw upon the biblical meta-narrative of creation, fall, redemption, and restoration; Evangelical Christian theological perspectives; and strategies drawn from the contemplative Christian tradition to ground the program thoroughly in a Christian psychological framework. The program includes a theoretical model to conceptualize the problem of disunity and proposes a potential solution to this issue. The program’s format, current empirical support, and areas for further research are addressed.
