Description
Summary:The relationship between business ethics and natural law is split into three phases. «Before the Relationship» gives a brief overview of key historical developments before 2008, including ancient relevant reflections, the emergence of economics as a separate discipline in the 18th century, and the much later development of the subject of business ethics itself in the 20th century. We argue that since its development as a separate discipline up until 2008, there was no serious relationship between business ethics and natural law thinking, even if there were some marginal thinkers, such as Arthur Fridolin Utz, who developed an economic ethics based on natural law. In «Starting the Relationship», it is argued that the 2008 financial crisis initiated a profound rethink in the discipline, and encouraged, in particular, the rise of virtue ethics within the field. Some of this literature is also connected with natural law. An analysis of a couple of representative papers is offered, aiming to highlight the role that natural law thinking is beginning to have in the discipline. «Looking to the Future: A Blossoming Relationship?», includes a discussion of possible prospects for the future of natural law thinking in business ethics.
