Description
Summary:We have traced the historical aspect of the present situation of French Muslims by characterizing the stages of their settlement in France, from the late 19th and early 20th century to the present. We have particularly emphasized the role of Islamic recruits, some of which settled in the metropolis during the First and Second World War. We were also indifferent to the fate of those betrayed by the former colonizers and serving in the auxiliary units (harkis). However, the Muslim labor emigration after the Second World War, and especially during 1956-1974, had the greatest significance for the contemporary picture of Muslim migration. The immigrants from the Maghreb and francophone African countries dominated then labor migration and prepared the ground for a fundamental change of the place of Muslims in France.
