Description
Summary:The category of homo religiosus arouses many controversies because of the associated philosophical interpretation suggesting that man is a naturally religious being. The claim that the religious way of being is an essential dimension of human existence explains, on the one hand, the ubiquity of religion, and on the other hand, the revivals of religiosity in human societies. It is surprising that the conception of the existence of a kind of religious tendency or disposition obtains confirmation from both phenomenological and cognitive studies of religion. In this article I defend the claim that the use of the category of homo religious is justified in the light of recent knowledge delivered by cognitive science. It has a cognitive value that enables to use it as a category helpful in explaining and understanding human behaviour. This category gains a new meaning from the perspective of the cognitive science. The latter not only contributes to empirical studies on religiosity but also gives rise to new philosophical reinterpretations of the concept of homo religious.
