This pericope, also known as the pericope of the primacy of St. Peter, despite of the facts in the doctrinal remarks of the Church, wasn’t just a fundamental text on the doctrine of primacy of the Pope. The social context of the particular era had a significant influence on the way biblical texts were interpreted. Therefore also the text of Matthew 16:16-19 was being interpreted within the Zeitgeist of the era and the theologians were trying to find an answer to the questions related to the doctrine of faith and those important to the people of that time. Presenting this problem the article shows the main interpretative tendencies of the mentioned biblical approach, dividing the history of the Church into: the first Millennium, the time from 10th to 16th Century, time of Reformation and the Trident Council, time of the first Vatican Council, time of the second Vatican Council, and the time after. This issue is being discussed on the basis of selected official documents of the Church, which include its doctrinal teachings.
