Description
Summary:In the paper, the authors ponder over the formation and development of one the popular saints’ cult - Boy from the Wooden Cradle devotion, characteristic of a town of Maracaí, in the state of São Paulo, Brazil. The authors, after presenting the phenomenon of specific Brazilian popular, Catholic religiosity, and, within that framework, of popular saints, tell the story of the Boy in the social, political and economic context of the 70s, 80s and 90s, regarded as the time of the biggest growth, development and stabilization of the cult at its current phase. In the paper, the authors present the results of a thorough research based on the local and regional press, their own field study (observation, interviews and questionnaires), and documentation (reports, statistics) available from the local municipal authorities.
