Summary: | The topic of this article is the Orthodox understanding of the unity of the Church. The "classical" treatises on the unity of the Church emphasize Trinitarian and Christological grounds of Church unity. A breakthrough in Orthodox ecclesiology in the 20th century was made by Eucharistic ecclesiology, the beginnings of which can be found in the works of Father Georges Florovsky. In his works Florovsky particularly emphasizes the important and seminal connection between the Eucharist and the Church. Nikolai Afanas'ev continued Florovsky's approach and asserted that the Church as the Body of Chrrst reveals herself in all her fullness in the Eucharistic celebration of every local Church. Afanas'ev's views were later continued and corrected to some extent by John Zizioulas, among others. Zizioulas emphasized that the community celebrattng the Eucharist with and around the bishop is the Church par excellence, but, although a local church is the whole Church, it cannot exist in isolation from other local churches. Even if there is consensus in Orthodoxy on all fundamental questions concerning church unity, the question of the relationship between synodality and primacy as well as the quest/on of the understanding of primacy (at the universal level) pose a challenge for future Orthodox theology. |
