Description
Summary:In the abundant literature which, provoked by Pope Francis' stimuli, illustrates the synodal institutions, it is frequently repeated that, in the West synodal practices would have disappeared due to the gradual affirmation of the authority of the bishop of Rome, while in the East the conviction was maintained, with the relative practices, that the Synod would constitute an essential structure of the Church. A careful consideration of history reveals: 1. That synodal practices in the West have been preserved, although above all at the local level (provincial councils and diocesan synods); 2. That Rome, while assu ming ever greater directive functions, has not mortified synodal practices, rather it has promoted them, considering them important tools for the reform of custums, especially of the ecclesiastics, and for defending the local Churches from the interference of civil powers. To realize this, it would be enough to go over the Western councils, which - taking up the practices of the first councils - in the reform decrees have always stimulated the celebration of local synods . The objective of this essay is to show: 1. That one cannot speak generically of synods; 2. That one must proceed with circumspection when one wishes to find synodal practices in the New Testament which should be proposed again today; 3. That the synods do not coincide with synodality: they are only instruments -- however diversified -- of this, which is a fundamental note of ecclesial life. (English)
