Summary: | Father Theodore Hesburgh, CSC, and Father James Groppi are generally not spoken of in the same context in American Catholic historical studies. However, the illustrious president of the University of Notre Dame and the young firebrand from Milwaukee shared a passion for civil rights. This article argues that the work of Hesburgh and Groppi on national housing reform circa 1967–1968 shows the limits and advantages of Catholic clerical activism on the national and local levels. It highlights the bureaucratic nature of Father Hesburgh's work on the United States Commission on Civil Rights and the importance of physical presence in Groppi's tactics. I hope to demonstrate that Father Groppi's radical activism had more in common with Hesburgh's basically conservative advocacy than superficial readings may suggest. |
