Summary: | This paper presents an analysis of two different Adventist musical repertoires: the songs published in hymnals for youth programs in the 1970s, and the songs of praise of recordings made between 2000-2020. Our analysis is based on the notion of habitus according to Bourdieu (1983; 2007) and Wacquant (2007) and proposes that the singularities of this musical repertoire result from processes of sorting elements from the liturgical and evangelical musical modernization that are due to the mental dispositions set off by the assimilation of the Adventist principle of stewardship. In order to showcase that the concept of habitus can explain how theological thought schemes guide Adventist music production, this paper has three sections: an exposition of the theoretical foundation from the notion of habitus; an explanation of the stewardship principle as interpreted by Adventist theologians, followed by an observation of this principle in Adventist music; finally, an examination of the filtering processes of elements of music, lyrics and performance distinguished in that musical repertoire. |
