Summary:Socialinequalityisaphenomenonthatcutsacrossallsocietiesandallsocialspheresoflife;however,itissoendemicinNigeria.Itisopinedinthispaperthatthedismalstateofsocialinequalityinthecountrytoaverylargeextent,hasledthecountryintounbearablestateofinsecurity.Although,manyunderlyingfactorshavebeensuggestedtohavecontributedtothemagnitudeofinsecurityinthecountry,theprevalenceofsocioeconomicinequalitieswithitsattendantresultsinabjectpoverty,highrateofunemploymentamongothers,isthemajorprecursorofchronicinsecurityinNigeria.ThepaperobservedthatsocialinequalityisbecomingmorepronouncedbythewideninggapbetweentherichandpoorandspecificallytheUpperclassandLowerclasscategoriesintheNigeriansociety.Thisstratificationisclearlymanifestedandobviousinalmostallthesocialrelationshipsbetweenthehavesandthehave-nots,amongthesociety.ThispaperbaseditsassumptiononBecker’secologicaleconomictheoryofinsecuritywhichseekstoexplainvariationsininsecurityratesthroughthedifferingincentives,pressures,anddeterrentsthatindividualsfaceindifferentenvironments.Thepaperexaminesthemajorformsofsocialinequalitiesexperiencedinthecountry:socio-economicinequality,politicalinequality,socio-culturalinequalityamongothersandhowtheyhavedirectimpactonthecurrentchallengesofinsecurityinthecountry.Itrevealedthatwiththegrowinginequalitiesamongthepopulace,unsuccessfulindividualsfeelfrustratedanddoeasilytaketocrimetohavetheirendsmet,hence,theunbearablestateofinsecurityintheland.Thepaperconcludedwithpractical solutions towards achieving relative peace and tranquility within the country.
