Summary: | ThewidespreaduseofsocialmediahasprovidedChristianchurcheswithanopportunitytowidentheirreachandextendtheirinfluencetotheiradherentsinnewways.WhileitisfairlyestablishedthatsomePentecostal’sministries’socialmediapresenceislargelymonitoredbytrainedmarketingteam,notallPentecostalministrieshavechosentopursuetheirsocialmediaoutreachinsuchapolishedmanner.However,itsproliferationhasallowedthePentecostalchurchestostateonetruthdoctrinally,butcommunicateanothertruththroughitsmediaoutlets.ThepaperassessedtheroleofsocialmediainthepurposivelyselectedindigenousPentecostalchurchesalongBadagryaxis.Fivechurcheswerepurposivelyselectedconsideringtheyearsofestablishmentandthefounderofthechurches.Phenomologicalandhistoricalapproacheswereusedforthestudy.Whileinterviewwascarriedoutwiththechurchfounders,eldersandworkersmaking25participantsfortheinterview,50self-structuredsurveyquestionnaireswereadministeredtothemembersofthefive(5)selectedchurches.ThePentecostalchurchespurposivelyselectedwere:TheRedeemedChristianChurchofGodLivingWatersParishalongSemeRoadBadagry(Province31),MountainofFireandMiracleMinistriesAdenuga,IberekoBadagry,FireandDeliveranceMinistriesAgankamehBadagry,FoursquareGospelChurchBadagry,LivingFaithChurch(WinnersChapel)TorikohBadagry.Theresultrevealedthattheroleofsocialmediacannotbeoveremphasizedespeciallyintheareaofevangelism,easyaccesstobotholdandnewmembers,thuscommunicationwasmademucheasier.ThestudyconcludesthatsocialmediahascausedashiftininfluencewithinthePentecostalchurches.IthasalsoallowedPentecostalchurchestoexertinfluenceontheiradherentswithmorepowerintheiraestheticrepresentationsthanintheirdoctrinalconstructions.ThestudyrecommendsthatPentecostalchurchleadersshouldendeavourtomakesurethattheirmessageinsocialmediaglorifyGodandnotflesh.Theresearcherrecommendsthatsocialmediashouldcontinuetoinfluencethedevelopmentofcommunalunderstandinganddoctrinaldevelopmentinstead of exalting flesh on social media. |
