Description
Summary:Studies have shown that comprehension of the Qur’an has a statistically significant positive effect on the mental health of Muslims. The emotions of hope and fear are proven indicators of the mental and psychological health of humans. This study analysed Qur’anic terms implicated in and responsible for the generation of hope for God’s mercy and fear of God. The study adopted a four-pronged approach to analyse hope and fear in the Qur’an. The initial stage quantitatively compared the synonyms for hope and fear. This was followed by a quantitative analysis of terms that do not directly denote hope and fear but that could evoke them. After this, terms for heaven and hell were quantitatively examined as the former represents the object of hope and the latter the object of fear. Finally, terms used in the actual descriptions of heaven and hell in the comparative pericopes were analysed. The results indicate that the Qur’an produces hope and fear in very different ways that are reflective of the psychological heterogeneity of these emotions. It concludes that the Qur’an redirects and rechannels the emotions of hope and fear to provoke constructive prototypical behaviours in the believer. But in effecting a transition from the emotional to the ethical, it maintains the primacy of hope over fear by inculcating trait-hope and enabling hope to regulate fear.
