Description
Summary:The Oracle of Zeus at Dodona was arguably the most ancient of Greek oracles. Throughout at least the later part of its existence it was in competition with the Oracle of Apollo at Delphi, which made increasing inroads into the authority of this most ancient of oracles. The fount of oracular wisdom at Dodona was an oak tree sacred to Zeus. Trees are natural objects which have a life and die. This article seeks to establish a date for the death of the oak tree at Dodona, and to investigate what affect this had on the perceived ‘competition’ from Delphi.
