Description
Summary:There has been much talk in the Church lately of clericalism, and of the need to condemn it and root it out. This article is intended to be a contribution to that conversation, within the wider context of what difference it makes to the Church and its effectiveness in society.1 Within the Catholic Church, it is taken for granted by many that a cleric is different from a layperson-and this difference is not understood as a matter of mere social status and its associated culture, but rather is described as ontological. The language used, however, sets up an opposition between clericalism and holiness, while, at the same time, linking the holiness with the ontological difference. The aim of this article is to examine whether there is any ground in the teaching of St Thomas Aquinas either for the opposition or for the link, and whether he, along with later developments, may provide a different approach to the discussion.
