Description
Summary:The crisis in the church is a crisis of parish life. Hence, parish life can serve as a diagnostic indicator for the health of the church in general. Various research surveys show that the numbers of Catholics attending Sunday Mass continue to drop. In many European Catholic dioceses, especially in Germany, financial scandals and sexual abuse of minors by priests have provoked a sharp decline in Mass attendance and an enormous bleeding of the church's membership. Within six decades, attendance at Mass in Germany has dwindled from 12.9 million Catholics (1960) to just 0.92 million (2021), a decline of almost 12 million. In the diocese of Wurzburg in Franconia an average of 5.2 per cent of Catholics attended Sunday Mass in 2021.
