Summary: | In April 2021 Pope Francis instituted a synod on the theme of synodality itself. The initial signs of refashioning a means of 'being church' are positive. Following the work of experts from around the Catholic world, background materials-the Preparatory Document and a Vademecum-were written and published to assist members of the church to reflect on their experience of 'being church'. During 2021 and 2022 these reflections, perhaps the largest social survey in human history, were gathered and synthesised by a group meeting in Frascati. During 2023 these reports are being considered in regional ('continental') meetings, before going to Rome for assemblies in October 2023 and October 2024. This article uses participant observant method to report on developments so far. |
