Σύνοψη:This contribution is divided into three parts. The first looks at legislation on the teaching of religion since the beginning of the twentieth century, with particular attention to the changes caused by the establishment of the communist regime and those that occurred recently with the new democracy. For the first non-communist government the reintegration of religious instruction with the schools' curricula became the benchmark of the freshly regained freedom. Currently religious education in Polish schools is limited almost exclusively to Roman Catholic Religious Instruction, which is taught from the confessional point of view. In the second part, alternatives to such an education are discussed, with special focus on the teaching of ethics. The third part is devoted to the history of the scientific study of religion, both in Roman Catholic academic institutions and in state universities. In Polish state universities these studies have their roots in the so-called «Polish School of Religious Studies», which is based on a modified Marxism noted for insisting less upon the orthodoxy of Soviet Religious Studies than for emphasying empirical research.
