Summary: | The author, tracing the history of the concept of secularism in the last two and a half centuries, when, in countries with a Catholic majority, the problem of the emancipation of public powers and institutions from the protection and control of the Catholic Church was put with particular force, identifies a set of essential steps toward the formation of the concept, from the criticism of the nexus of Church-State-religion-society by the Enlightenment and the French Revolution, until the Second Vatican Council, which ratified not only the recognition of religious freedom, founded on human dignity, but also the recognition of the ecclesial role of the laity and its primary responsibility in the temporal realm. The analysis shows that the debate on secularism and its characters, at least in Italy, appears still very open, either on the side of the Church, and on that of the public institutions, continuing to raise doubts and discussions.
