Summary: | The study of the materia magica which was found in the Nymphaeum of Anna Perenna shows that the graphical and textual methods of defixiones are very various. The main components are designs of demons and victims of the curse, magic letters and characters, magical formulas, and finally the actual curse texts. These elements are directly adjacent to each other or are connected to each other. They often follow a development that begins with graphic signs of non-specific magical meaning and only gradually proceeds to the individual details of the curse. The authors and writers of the curse texts do not only belong to the lower classes with a limited competence in writing and composing. They were also written by people of higher education, who were able to formulate more complex texts and to write them down easily and with a certain elegance of hand-writing. This competence is the reason of the fact that most of the texts are formulated individually and do not follow certain models. (English) |
