| Summary: | This paper examines the comparisons used by fray Bernardino de Sahagún between Mexica's gods and Roman deities, as well as significant variations in the process of identification that is to be found in his work. Sahagún's perspective on Native deities swings between the recognition of resemblances with Graeco-Roman pantheon, the Euhemerist theory, the presence of the Devil in America and also traces of a possible evangelization that occurred prior to the Spanish conquest. As in the case of the Mexica pantheon's tripartite division, this model was inspired by Augustine's City of God. This paper analyzes the classifications operated by modern scholars who have utilized Western categories without wondering about the Indian ways of organizing their own pantheon. Finally, some alternatives of autochthonous classifications are suggested as well as the proposal that some actual researches on the Spanish colonial use of the pantheon of Classical antiquity might represent a valuable source of inspiration for Mesoamerican studies.
