| Summary: | With the sermons and the works of Richard Bentley (1662-1742), the Boyle Lectures became a sort of scientific defence of Christian religion. The English new natural philosophy and the Newtonian view of it were used by the Anglican Church, to prove the truth of the Bible. Isaac Newton himself promoted this theological vision of scientific culture with his four letters to doctor Bentley, written in 1692-93. Starting from that period, all the Newtonian activities were signed by a strong relation with the world of British protestant faith. The first Enlightenment era was, in the United Kingdom, during the Eighteenth century, the golden age of so-called "rational theology", against deists, radical free-thinkers, pantheists, libertines, materialists, and atheists. The science herself was an ideological arm of the Tradition's institutional defenders. As described by his manuscripts, Newton was also an heretic philosopher, but only in the private life.
