Texts are marked by large differences, which correspond to the specificity of each history and to each author's judgment on it and on his own purposes, but, through the examination of Paul the Deacon's Historia Langobardorum and a survey of later writings (ix-xiii century), it is proposed that in all works are essential the attention and trust in the oral traditions, and on the other hand the awareness of the changes over time in their subject. Especially important is the entrance of the gens, thanks to conversion, in a world united by faith and Latin language, which the Authors feel they belong to and to which, by writing, they want to communicate their history and their own idea of themselves.
