Summary: | There have been many versions of Schleiermacher’s lectures on pedagogy available over the years, though sometimes only in abridged form (for example, in the first of Winkler and Brachmann’s 2000 Suhrkamp two-volume edition of pedagogical writings). Most recently, Ehrhardt and Virmond’s De Gruyter 2008 paperback edition of the 1820-21 lecture series, reproduced within this present volume (pp. 345-538), contained as full a version of the lectures from that academic year as the Carl Platz edition from 1849 permitted. In this collection, versions of the 1813-14 and 1826 lectures are also presented, together with short aphoristic reflections and additions to the 1813-14 and 1820-21 series, alongside over 250 pages of official communications from the period 1810-14 on matters of public/state education. These were deemed by the editorial team to be so deeply interwoven in their ideas and content with the substance of the pedagogy lectures that they therefore appear here in the same volume of the critical edition. |
