Description
Summary:This French study of Augustine’s trinitarian theology in his popular preaching offers a thorough rebuttal of the many critics, in the twentieth century especially, who have accused Augustine of disconnecting the doctrine of the Trinity from its proper place in Christian life, and of handing down a baneful legacy in this respect to later Western theologians. Kolawole Chabi argues that the accusation arose in part from studying the De trinitate in isolation from Augustine’s wider teaching on the Trinity in the sermons, and in part from a misreading of the De trinitate which ignores what Augustine says about the treatise’s scope and target audience, and which often wrongly treats as analogies what Augustine proposes as resemblances. Framed by a brief introduction and conclusion, the book’s seven chapters fall into three parts. Part I (chapters 1 and 2) looks at the De trinitate and what critics have made of it, and gives Chabi’s initial response to its critics. Part II (chapters 3 and 4) introduces the Sermones ad populum as vehicles of Augustine’s doctrinal teaching. Part III (chapters 5-7) studies in detail what these sermons have to say about the Trinity.
