Description
Summary:Few theological discussions elicit as vociferous opinions as those that touch on Augustine’s theology of the will. This should not surprise. First, the African Bishop’s theological influence on the topic is unparalleled. (Recall Albert Dihle’s oft-quoted remark that Augustine was the inventor our modern notion of the will.) Second, the ramifications of Augustine’s theology of the will reverberate in any serious analysis of our conception of God, the human person, and their relations. What is needful, then, is a judicious and careful study of Augustine’s own writings on the topic. Han-luen Kantzer Komline offers precisely such an account in Augustine on the Will. Her study spells a major scholarly achievement.
