Description
Summary:On August 18, 1559 the Popolo Romano, the civic governors of Rome, staged a massive riot against the dying Paul IV. The civic magistrates led the people against the headquaters of the Roman Inquisition inciting crowds to attack the Dominican friars who staffed the Holy Office, free imprisioned heretics, and burn down the entire edifice housing the trial records. This paper focuses of the civic magistrates, along with Roman nobility and people, who staged the riot as a form of protest against Raum IV's governmental policies rather than the Inquisition's activities.
