| Summary: | Born in Spain in 1574, the Jesuit Sebastiano Salelles lived in Malta for 62 years, from 1604 until his death, in 1666, during which he served as consultor to the Inquisition. In 1646 he wanted to print in Venice his own book entitled De materiis tribunalium Sanctae Inquisitionis. On 27 January 1646 the inquisitor of Venice, fra Anselmo Oliva rom Brescia, writes to the Roman Congregation of the Holy Office in Rome to illustrate his doubts about Salelles' work. Oliva had also sent the manuscript work to Rome. Salelles only managed to publish his book in Rome with imprimatur in 1651. So as to secure a much desired protection, Salelles dedicated the volumes to three different persons namely, Mgr Fabio Chigi, Mgr Gerolamo Farnese and Mgr Giacomo Tassi. |
