Summary: | Is there in the Hermetic texts a demiurgic Intellect that produces the cosmos thinking through images? The existence of philosophical and religious currents that attribute to the demiurgical Intellect a discursive thought or diánoia is well attested in late antiquity and is one of the conceptual issues around which Plotinus articulates his polemic against the Gnostics. Broadening the comparison to the philosophical arguments of Plotinus on the one hand and to the rituals of vision contained in the Demotic and Greek magical papyri on the other, rare occurrences were isolated in which the reason of a demiurgic creation through diánoia is also attested in the Hermetic texts: as mythical Anthropos' mistake in Poimandres and as doctrinal element, which seems to combine cosmogonic process and vision ritual, in the Hermetica Oxoniensia and CH IX (English) |
