| Summary: | This article presents a discussion of and a reaction to Pargament's article, The Psy- chology of Religion and Spirituality: Yes and No. I acknowledge the great importance of the issues raised by Pargament concerning the basic understanding of psy- chology of religion. I agree that psychology of religion needs to relate to the phenomena commonly denoted as spirituality. Whereas Pargament prefers to see spirituality as part of religion, based on an understanding of the sacred as the common core of the two concepts, I argue in favor of the following three points: (a) Spirituality needs to be better defined in order to lead to a more fruitful discussion; (b) I don't find the arguments convincing for giving sacredness such a central place in the definition of spirituality (existentiality would probably serve this goal better); and therefore (c) spirituality is best seen as a wider concept than religion. My proposals and statements are tentative and are based on the European discussion of the same issues, and some examples are presented from theories of European origin. |
