This surprising reading, known as 'the justification clause', appears only here in the surviving manuscripts of Augustine’s works, although it shows up elsewhere in other witnesses to the verse itself. Scholars have described the reading as 'intriguing', 'astounding', 'very interesting', and 'striking'. The editors of the two major critical editions of De utilitate ieiunii draw opposite conclusions concerning its place in the sermon’s initial text. The sermon’s surviving documentary evidence strongly favors its inclusion. Intrinsic considerations are clearly on the side of its exclusion. In this article, the author does not vindicate either conclusion but shows how the decision really could go either way by providing an analysis of the various text-critical issues involved with the justification clause in Vat.lat.5758 and Latin 792. The major takeaways are an increased awareness of the existence of this surprising reading in Augustinian manuscripts and a deeper understanding of the text-critical matters associated with it for both the sermon and the text of Philippians 3:12 itself. |
