Summary: | The paper intends to clarify the meaning of the first words of Jesus’ preaching in the Gospel of Mark: πεπλήρωται ὁ καιρός (Mk 1,15). After reviewing the main interpretations proposed so far, the paper focuses on the other New Testament texts which refer to the fullness of time: Gal 4,4; Eph 1,10. In these passages, the fullness of time is the result of the apocalyptic irruption of God’s salvation in Christ, which fulfills the history of salvation. A similar view is found in Mk 1,15: time is fulfilled by the kingdom of God, inaugurated by Jesus, which marks the turning point in history and fulfills the prophetic promises. Therefore, the apocalyptic and historical-salvific perspectives are not mutually exclusive in the first words of Jesus in Mark. |
