Description
Summary:The paper gives new light on one of the most famous episodes of Florentine communal history, the Buondelmonti homicide, symbolic point of origin of the factionalism. Giovanni Villani relates this event, filling his exposition of biblical quotes - in particular from the Book of Genesis - and overlapping apparently different narrations. This crime becomes thus part of a narrative and chronicle path going from the Creation to the foundation of Florence that has the goal to investigate the origins of the Factions, not as just a local rivalry, but as a manifestation of supernatural events connected to the Genesis.
