Description
Summary:This article is the fruit of critical reflection on the experience of teaching practical and pastoral theology for six years at the Catholic Institute of Sydney1 and the practice of professional pastoral supervision of clergy for three years. All pastoral units have experiential components and the two Supervised Pastoral Ministry units that are constitutive components of the academic pastoral program undertaken by seminarians, deacon candidates and laypeople are grounded in critical self-reflection on pastoral experience. In practice the order is a little flexible, but in theory at least the double-unit, "Supervised Pastoral Ministry (Hospital)", builds on the semester-long "Supervised Pastoral Ministry (Parish)". The units differ from each other in structure, content, and impact, but suffice to say their primary task is pastoral formation. The purpose of this article is to inform the practice of those engaged in training for Christian ministry.
